Factors to Consider when choosing an Irrigation Method/System

Crop – crops have different water requirements. For crops with high water demands, you will need irrigation equipment with high water discharge (be it dripline, sprinkler or pivot)

Field size and soil type – field size is often proportional to water demands. We size pipes according to your water demands and distances.
Topography – very critical in sizing pump and pipes (from water source). In the fields, we consider slopes especially on drip irrigation, as a rule of thumb: driplines should cut across slopes unless its Pressure Compensating dripline type or a pressurized system. Overhead systems are often preferred where slopes are a challenge
Water source – quality, capacity, location from the fields etc influence irrigation design
Fuel & electricity availability: some irrigation systems can run on gravity eg drip, whilst some require pumping power (solar can be the most sustainable in the long-run).
